Travel Throwback #2: Berlin

By Unknown - 07:00:00

Hey guys!
Welcome to the second part of the series 'Travel Throwback'! Today I'm sharing another school trip with you: Berlin! A city I'd never been before and I hadn't thought of being so cool. I'll be showing you my favourite spots of Berlin and my favourite photos. Enjoy!
The trip to Berlin was shorter than the trip to Rome, only four days, but we've done and seen a lot during those days. We had great weather in Berlin, much better than we expected it would be. Most spots we visited are related to World War II, which isn't a surprise at all for you I guess. If you're going to Berlin you can not not visit something related to the Holocaust.

One of the things you definitely need to visit and probably everybody knows is the East Side Gallery. Unfortunately, I didn't make pictures of it, because I forgot my camera that day (so stupid). We went on a bike tour to visit the East Side Gallery and I'd really recommend doing that, it's an easy way to travel across the city. We also went to this really cool Jamaican beach bar called YAAM at the East Side Gallery, but unfortunately it had to move in 2013 to another venue.

Holocaust Mahnmal, May 19th 2012.

One of the first things we visited was the Holocaust Mahnmal, and I think this is also one of the spots I was impressed by the most. It looks so simple but walking through it you feel disorientated and like there's no way out, just like how the people in concentration camps felt... If you visit this monument, please remember it's a monument so don't sit on the blocks or play hide and seek, I think that's very disrespectful.

Brandenburger Tor, May 19th 2012.

Another spot that's pretty famous is the Brandenburger Tor. It's pretty huge so you can't miss it (only if you're called Sherilynn and even though there's a huge sign with Brandenburger Tor on it on the other side you don't recognize it). I think it looks pretty good on photographs too so another reason to pay it a visit. ;)

Die Reichstag, May 19th 2012.

We also visited Die Reichstag that day or as the German call it the Bundestag. The name Reichstag refers to the building, Bundestag to the German parliament, which is located here. The reason why we mainly went to the Reichstag is the dome, which you can see on the photo above. From here you have a great view over Berlin and I think the dome looks pretty cool because it's made out of glass and mirrors. If you only want to visit the dome you still have to go through a lot of security, so be prepared for that.

Berliner Dom & Fernsehnturm, May 20th 2012.

Two other spots you definitely should pay a visit are the Berliner Dom and the Fernsehnturm. Just look at the photograph, don't they look beautiful together? Especially the turquoise dome of the cathedral is really photogenic.

Konzerthaus, May 21st 2012.

The next day we went to the Konzerthaus and some churches in the morning. I was pretty impressed by the Konzerthaus, I didn't know it was this big. We made a group picture with all the students on the steps of the Konzerthaus and just enjoyed the sun a bit. It's not one of my favourite buildings of Berlin but I really liked the quality of the picture so I just wanted to share it with you guys. :)

Checkpoint Charlie, May 21st 2012.

Checkpoint Charlie is the best-known crossing point of the Berlin Wall during the Cold War. Nowadays, it's an open-airmuseum with a copy of the checkpoint itself. It's a really touristic spot and if you're interested in the Cold War it's worth the visit. You can also find many souvenirs shops here and Starbucks (I drank my first Starbucks ever here).

Alte Nationalgalerie, May 21st 2012.

In the afternoon you could choose which museum you wanted to go to. They said choose, but all the students with Art had to go to the Alte Nationalgalerie, so I went to the Alte Nationalgalerie. I didn't mind at all, I would've chosen the art museum anyways, because I love art. The gallery shows a collection of  different art movements like Impressionism, Neoclassical (you can find a lot of beautiful marble sculptures at the gallery), Romantic and more. So if you enjoy art as much as I do, you should definitely pay this museum a visit.

Jüdisches Museum, May 22nd 2012.

On the last day we went to the Jewish Museum. I was really tired and didn't want to go to be honest, but I'm glad we had to. I was overwhelmed by this museum. On the photo above you see 'Shalekhet (Fallen Voices)' a dark room with thousands of faces made out of steel on the floor. The artwork is dedicated to all the Jews killed during World War II and also all the victims of violence and war, and it has had a huge impact on me. The feeling you get here, I can't describe it, you have to see it for yourself.

I hope you enjoyed this blogpost and got some inspiration for your trip to Berlin! I know I've talked a lot about museums, but it was a school trip so that's why we went to so many.
Have you ever been to Berlin and what was your favourite spot?

x Sherilynn
